Trump slaps China, signs legislation to free Tibetans, may defeat his Dalai Lama

Washington, Monday 28 December 2020

Rejecting the ongoing tensions between China and the US and Beijing’s warnings, US President Donald Trump signed into law giving Tibetans the right to choose their Dalai Lama’s next successor. Passed, of which China is on par with Guinness, and its foreign ministry called it an attempt to interfere in China’s internal affairs.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Bang Wenbin said that the United States has urged not to interfere in China’s internal affairs and refrained from signing this negative law. This does not happen to harm bilateral relations in the future.

US law called for the opening of the US embassy in Lhasa city of Tibet, stating that Tibetans have the right to elect a successor to the 14th Dalai Lama. However, Tibet does not accept China’s claim.

What does the new law say

Under the new law, the American Special Envoy in Tibet is empowered by the Buddhist community in Tibet to choose only the next Dalai Lama, to determine if it can form an international alliance.

It provides support to NGOs in support of the Tibetan community.

New Chinese consulates in the US will be banned until an American consulate is established in Lhasa, Tibet.

The law empowers the US government to impose economic sanctions and visa restrictions on any Chinese official who interferes with the Dalai Lama’s successor.
