Putnam Increases Money Lead, New Poll Shows Double Digit Lead in GOP Governor Race

State Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam raised another $1.7 million in May for his gubernatorial campaign, bringing the overall total of campaign and affiliated political committee donations to over $30 million. His Republican opponent, Congressman Ron DeSantis, has raised just $3 million – though he’s only been in the race since January while Putnam has been raising money for this campaign for several years.

Putnam also received additional good news from a poll released by the Florida Chamber of Commerce, which shows him with a 17 point lead over DeSantis, 32-15. The poll is an outlier from recent surveys showing the race for the Republican nomination is neck-and-neck. Most of the Chamber poll was also conducted prior to revelations that Putnam’s office failed to review background checks for a one year period resulting in nearly 300 ineligible people temporarily receiving a concealed weapon permit. A fact that was kept from the public for a year.

Very few Republicans have rushed to support Putnam’s handling of the gun issue. On Monday, Governor Scott was critical without using Putnam’s name calling the lack of oversight “disturbing” and saying, “I expect everybody to be held accountable.” Scott has not endorsed a candidate to replace him as governor, and likely won’t. It’s common knowledge around the state Capitol that Scott and Putnam have a frosty relationship.
