Senator Bill Nelson will visit the Homestead Detention Center Saturday where he was denied access earlier this week. Ninety-four of the 1,000 children held at the facility were removed from their parents at the U.S.-Mexican border. The federal agency in control of the facility, Health and Human Services, waived the two-week notice requirement they used to deny Nelson access on Tuesday.
Nelson will be joined by two Democrat members of Congress Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Frederica Wilson. It’s unknown if any Republican members of Congress were invited to Nelson’s organized tour.
According to the schedule released by Nelson’s Senate office, he’ll speak to the media before the tour, go on the tour and then speak to the media again.
