In a sign the Tallahassee establishment is warming to his campaign, the political organization representing Florida’s doctors has endorsed Ron DeSantis for governor. This is Congressman DeSantis’ first endorsement from a Tallahassee trade association. Those groups, which represent a variety of special interests, have generally supported Adam Putnam’s campaign for governor. But with Putnam’s campaign waining in recent weeks, the Florida Medical Association Political Action Committee endorsement of DeSantis signifies a major departure just weeks before the Republican Primary.
“The FMA PAC is proud to be the first statewide association to endorse Congressman Ron DeSantis as Florida’s next Governor,” said Dr. Mike Patete, FMA PAC President. “Rep. DeSantis addressed our PAC board members in June and shared his vision for our great state. We believe he is a true friend of medicine and will represent Florida’s more than 22,000 physicians on issues impacting our patients, policies and the quality and availability of health care.”
The Florida Medical Association and DeSantis share some common values. FMA, bucking the American Medical Association, opposed the Affordable Care Act. DeSantis supports repeal of “Obamacare.”
“I’m proud to have the endorsement of the Florida Medical Association and all of the physicians the organization represents,” said Congressman DeSantis. “Having affordable and accessible healthcare is essential for Floridians and as Governor, I look forward to working with the FMA to find ways to make the doctor-patient relationship stronger and to reduce costs.”
DeSantis addressed the Florida Medical Association PAC during its June meeting in Tampa and will speak to members again this weekend.
