In an extraordinary move considering this era of hyper-partisanship, Republican Ashley Moody has received crossover support from Democrats in the race for Attorney General.

Moody announced Thursday she’s gotten the backing of nearly 90 percent of Florida’s sheriffs. That’s 57 of Florida’s 66 elected sheriff’s and includes eight Democrats. The former federal prosecutor and state circuit judge had already received the support of 43 Republican sheriffs during her primary race. Now an additional six GOP sheriffs have signed up to support Moody.

“Florida faces difficult issues, like the opioid epidemic, human trafficking, and elder abuse,” said Moody. “Florida needs an Attorney General who has experience leading investigations, prosecuting cases, and who will put the safety of our communities and the rule of law above partisan politics. I will always be grateful for the great honor of endorsement from these law enforcement professionals who protect our citizens each and every day.”

In a joint statement, Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma and Walton County Sheriff Mike Adkinson shared that, “As some of Ashley Moody’s earliest supporters, we are excited to announce a bipartisan addition of sheriff endorsements for Ashley Moody. Ashley has now been endorsed by 57 sheriffs; nearly 90 percent of Florida’s elected sheriffs. She has rightfully earned the trust of sheriffs throughout Florida because she remains the only candidate who has prosecuted a case and put away criminals. As a former federal prosecutor, judge, and as the wife of a law enforcement officer, she’s dedicated her life to standing alongside the men and women in uniform and we know she will work tirelessly to ensure law enforcement has the tools necessary to protect and serve our communities to keep them safe.”

Besides the 57 Florida sheriffs, Moody has won support from associations representing the police chiefs and rank and file police officers.

The 14 Democratic and Republican sheriffs who have just endorsed Moody include:

Sheriff Larry Ashley, Okaloosa County (R)
Sheriff Homer “Gator” DeLoach, Putnam County (R)
Sheriff David Hardin, Glades County (D)
Sheriff Dewey Hatcher, Dixie County (D)
Sheriff Robert Johnson, Santa Rosa County (R)
Sheriff Brian Lamb, Lafayette County (D)
Sheriff David Morgan, Escambia County (R)
Sheriff James Potter, DeSoto County (D)
