Two years after the worse mass shooting in U.S. history, Orlando is shaken again following a day-long hostage standoff that ended when police discovered a gunman murdered four children – ages 1, 6, 10 and 11 – and then took his own life.
Police have identified the shooter as 35-year-old Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr, a convicted felon.
The standoff started Sunday night when police were called to apartments near Universal Studios after a woman accused Lindsey of assaulting her. Police attempted to arrest Lindsey but a shootout ensued. Orlando Police officer Kevin Valencia was wounded, transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Officer Valencia is expected to survive.
Police had contact with Lindsey throughout the day as they encouraged him to release the children – two of whom were his, while the other two were the alleged domestic abuse victims’.
After police lost contact with Lindsey late Monday, they attempted to rescue the children, only to find the horrific discovery.
