Mark the Republican race for Florida Attorney General as the nastiest campaign in Florida – with most of the dirt coming from one side.
Former Circuit Judge Ashley Moody is firing back after her opponent, corporate attorney and State Representative Frank White accused her of being “soft of child predators.”
In response to that accusation, half of Florida’s Republican state attorneys – all of whom support Moody – have released a letter saying “Frank White is uniquely unfit to serve.”
United Conservatives, a political committee supporting White, sent a mailer around Florida this week making the latest claims against Moody’s record as a former federal prosecutor and judge.
The hyperbolic accusations specifically accused Moody on being lenient in two cases she handled – one as a prosecutor and the other as a judge.
In 2004 while Moody served as a United States prosecutor, she requested a 6 year sentence for Steven Carty for possession of child pornography. Because Carty immediately pled guilty to the charges, federal sentencing guidelines require the prosecutor to recommend lowering the offense level for sentencing.
In the 2016 case involving Jared Henry, a then-16 year old accused of making and distributing child pornography, then-Judge Moody took Henry’s age into consideration when sentencing him to 8 years in prison rather than 15 years.
Based on the United Conservatives mailer, nine state attorneys released a letter saying “His (White’s) most recent attack against Ashley Moody only underscores his lack of understanding or qualifications to be the top prosecutor in Florida. It reflects a dangerous inclination to blur the truth in a system that depends on the honor of the leaders that guard it and, more astonishingly, ignorance to criminal practice and criminal law.”
Earlier in July, White released a television commercial accusing Moody of being a liberal. Moody released her first television commercial this past week and stayed positive, offering a biographical look at her career.
