U.S. Senator – Republican
Governor Rick Scott easily defeated Roque De La Fuente (89%-11%) to officially set the November matchup with incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. Both Scott and Nelson released new ads Tuesday and it’s clear this will be an expensive battle that could determine which party controls the United States Senate.
This was the biggest contest of the night with Congressman Ron DeSantis winning by a wide margin over Agriculture Adam Putnam (56%-37%). The biggest shocker came on the Democratic side when Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, despite being outspent by four other candidates, beat frontrunner Gwen Graham to claim the nomination.
Former Judge Ashley Moody easily defeated corporate attorney Frank White for the Republican nomination. The contest was the most heated race of the election cycle with White doing most of the attacking. It didn’t payoff as Moody beat White 57%-43%.
On the Democratic side, State Representative Sean Shaw trounced Ryan Torrens 74%-26%.
It’ll be State Representative Matt Caldwell, Republican, against lobbyist Nikki Fried, Democrat, in the November general election. Caldwell impressively won in a crowded 4-person Republican primary. Fried also impressively defeated two other opponents and won with 59% of the vote.
